Photographing a tradeshow is not easy. It takes practice and a special skill set to capture the required photos at conventions, tradeshows, and meetings.
Business Meeting Photography
Business Meetings are usually set in a large room without additional lighting. This means the ambient light is not ideal for photos. That is the first obstacle to overcome. Next is capturing enough quality shots to satisfy the needs of the marketing department without being overly obtrusive to those attending the meeting.
Usually, the safe bet is using a very high ISO to make use of available light and a very long lens. The lens allows you to photograph from the back of the room or off to the side. This way most attendees don’t really know how many shots you are taking because you are not in the field of view.
For a few “must-have” shots flash is needed to guarantee the shot. Flash will stop motion and enhance the look of the subject. I usually reserve flash for on-stage introductions, handshakes, etc. when I take a few shots with flash I know the most important moments are captured. All the others are really just bonus shots.
The tradeshow floor has lighting but usually very off in color. The first thing that needs to be done is to estimate the kelvin temperature of the lighting. With this information, the camera can be set to match the temperature which will assure better skin tones as well as more precise exposure. Later this can be fine-tuned in post-processing if the guestimate was off more than 200-300 degrees kelvin.
The goal is always to show a full room and full aisles. This means the photographer needs to be in position at peak showtimes. Capture as many crown shots as needed then focus on the more detailed booth and individual shots. No marketing department wants to advertise a trade show with empty aisles.
